ADP Competitors: 10 Alternatives by Category and Price

ADP Competitors
Add us as a preferred source
TL;DR
  • ADP is not one product, so ADP competitors is not one question. RUN, Workforce Now, TotalSource and Global Payroll each have a different set of alternatives, and picking from the wrong category is the most common mistake.
  • The ten alternatives split into five categories: payroll software, HCM suites, PEOs, Employers of Record and global payroll aggregators. Every entry is labelled, so you can rule out four of the five in a minute.
  • Of the providers we checked, Gusto, OnPay, QuickBooks Payroll and Paycor (under 50 employees) publish a list price, while ADP, Paychex, Workday, Rippling and TriNet publish none, as of 2026.
  • Paychex and Paycor are one company. Paychex completed the $4.1 billion acquisition on April 14, 2025, so any comparison that ranks them as rival vendors is out of date.

Discover how Wisemonk creates impactful and reliable content.

Searching for ADP competitors usually means one of four different things, and each one leads to a different shortlist.

You might run a 20-person company that wants lower-cost payroll. You might be replacing a mid-market HR suite. You might be consolidating payroll across 30 countries.

Or your real problem is not payroll at all. It is employing people in a country where you have no legal entity.

Most lists of ADP alternatives mix those four readers together. This one labels the category on every entry and says which reader it serves, so you can rule out most of the list quickly.

Who are ADP's competitors at a glance?

The ten alternatives below cover five categories: payroll software, HCM suites, PEOs, Employers of Record and global payroll aggregators. Only some publish a rate you can read without a sales call; most quote on request. Read the category column first: it decides whether a provider can replace the ADP product you use.

Here is the whole list in one view, checked in September 2026.

That price column deserves its own section, because it decides how long your evaluation takes.

Which ADP product are you actually replacing?

ADP sells four different things under one brand. RUN is payroll for 1 to 49 employees. Workforce Now is the mid-market HCM suite. TotalSource is a PEO that co-employs your staff. Global Payroll aggregates payroll across roughly 140 countries. Each has different competitors.

Name the product you are leaving before you shortlist anything.

  • RUN Powered by ADP: Small-business payroll and tax filing for 1 to 49 employees. Its competitors are payroll software, not HR suites.
  • ADP Workforce Now: Mid-market HCM covering payroll, benefits, talent and time. Its competitors are full HCM suites, which is a much bigger purchase than payroll alone.
  • ADP TotalSource: A professional employer organization that co-employs your US staff and pools them into large benefits plans. Only another PEO replaces it.
  • ADP Global Payroll: An aggregator that consolidates payroll across about 140 countries through local partners, per ADP's own material. Its competitors are other aggregators and Employers of Record.

Once you know which product you are replacing, the category of the replacement follows.

What are the five categories of ADP alternative?

Payroll software runs pay and tax filing. HCM suites add benefits, talent and time. PEOs co-employ your US staff. Employers of Record employ people for you abroad. Global payroll aggregators pull many countries into one contract. Most buyers need only one of the five.

  • Payroll software: Runs pay runs, tax filing and year-end forms. Best for US teams under about 100 people. Gusto, OnPay and QuickBooks Payroll sit here, and so does most outsourced payroll.
  • HCM suite: Payroll plus benefits, talent, time and reporting in one system. Best for 100 to 5,000 employees. Rippling, Paycor and Workday sit here.
  • PEO: A co-employer that puts your staff on its own tax and benefits registration. Best for US companies under about 200 people that want large-group benefits pricing. Paychex HR PEO and TriNet sit here.
  • Employer of Record: The legal employer of your staff in a country where you have no entity. Best when you are hiring abroad, not when you are replacing US payroll. Deel and Wisemonk sit here.
  • Global payroll aggregator: One contract stretched over many local payroll providers. Best once you already run payroll in 10 or more countries. ADP's own Global Payroll is one, and Deel sells this too.

Four of those five will not apply to you, which is the fastest way to shorten the list.

Which ADP competitors publish a price, and which make you ask?

Four of the US payroll and HCM contenders publish a rate you can read without a sales call: Gusto, OnPay, QuickBooks Payroll, and Paycor for companies under 50 employees. ADP, Paychex, Workday, Rippling and TriNet publish none. That single fact shapes your whole evaluation timeline.

We read each provider's own pricing page in September 2026. These are the figures those pages carry, and nothing else, which is how a payroll pricing comparison should be built.

What does a quote-only vendor actually cost you?

  • Time: A quote-only provider adds a discovery call, a demo and a proposal cycle before you see a number. Budget two to four weeks per vendor.
  • Comparability: Quotes bundle modules differently, so two proposals rarely line up. Ask every vendor to price the same module list, including the work you would otherwise keep in house.
  • Renewal exposure: A negotiated rate gets negotiated again at renewal. A published rate does not move on you the same way.

With the categories and the pricing settled, here are the ten providers in detail.

1. Gusto: payroll software for US teams under 100

Gusto is US payroll software with light HR attached. It runs pay, files federal, state and local taxes, and administers benefits. It is the most common replacement for RUN Powered by ADP among small businesses.

  • Category: Payroll software.
  • Best for: US companies under about 100 employees that want a clean interface and self-serve setup. If it falls short on HR depth, the closest Gusto alternatives are Rippling and Paycor.
  • Pricing: Gusto publishes its rates: Simple at $49 per month plus $6 per person, Plus at $80 plus $12, and Premium at $180 plus $22 per person.
  • The honest limitation: Gusto does not operate its own Employer of Record, so hiring abroad is not native. Gusto Global is delivered by Remote, and Remote is the legal employer of those staff.

2. OnPay: flat-fee US payroll with a published rate

OnPay is US payroll software with one plan and no tiers. Everything it sells sits inside that plan, which is why its price is easy to hold against an ADP quote.

  • Category: Payroll software.
  • Best for: US companies that want one predictable bill and do not need an HR suite bolted on top.
  • Pricing: $49 per month base plus $6 per worker, published on its own pricing page as of September 2026. The HR add-on is $15 plus $2 per worker, and time tracking is $15 plus $4.
  • The honest limitation: United States only, across 50 states and DC. One overseas hire forces you into a second payroll system to reconcile.

3. QuickBooks Payroll: US payroll for teams already on QuickBooks

QuickBooks Payroll is Intuit's US payroll product, built to sit on top of QuickBooks accounting. The pull is the ledger integration rather than the payroll engine itself.

  • Category: Payroll software.
  • Best for: US companies already running QuickBooks accounting that want payroll posting straight into the same ledger.
  • Pricing: Workforce Payroll from $50 per month, Workforce Premium from $88 and Workforce Elite from $134, as of September 2026, plus a per-employee fee that Intuit's own pages state inconsistently. The older Core, Premium and Elite plan names are retired.
  • The honest limitation: United States only, and the value depends on staying on QuickBooks. Move your accounting elsewhere and the main reason to pick it goes with it.

4. Rippling: HR, IT and spend in one system

Rippling is an HR platform that also provisions laptops, apps and corporate cards from the same employee record. The draw is that onboarding sets up payroll and IT access in one pass.

  • Category: HCM suite with IT and spend management.
  • Best for: Companies from roughly 50 to 2,000 employees that want HR, devices and spend in one system. If that bundle is more than you need, the closer Rippling alternatives are worth a look.
  • Pricing: Not published. Its own pricing page asks you to request a custom quote. A widely quoted per-employee figure comes from Rippling's blog rather than its rate card, so treat that number as indicative only.
  • The honest limitation: Coverage is narrower than the headline suggests, and Rippling does not publish a consolidated country count on its product pages. The figures in circulation come from its blog, so ask what your quote actually covers.

5. Paychex: the closest like-for-like to ADP

Paychex is the provider most similar to ADP in shape: payroll, HR services and a PEO, sold with a named service representative. If you are leaving ADP over service rather than product, this is the obvious comparison.

  • Category: Payroll bureau, HR services and PEO.
  • Best for: US mid-market companies that want a person to call and a PEO option under the same roof. The usual checklist for choosing a payroll provider applies here more than anywhere.
  • Pricing: Not published. Its plans, from Flex Select through Flex Enterprise plus HR Pro and HR PEO, are quoted on request as of September 2026.
  • The honest limitation: Paychex carries the same pricing opacity you may be leaving ADP over. It also now owns Paycor, so choosing between the two is a choice between product lines at one company.

6. Paycor: mid-market HCM, now a Paychex company

Paycor is a full HCM suite covering payroll, benefits, talent and workforce management. Paychex completed its $4.1 billion acquisition of Paycor on April 14, 2025, so the two now sit inside one company.

  • Category: HCM suite, owned by Paychex.
  • Best for: Growing US companies that want an HCM suite and a published price before they talk to sales.
  • Pricing: Published for companies under 50 employees: Basic $99 plus $5 per employee, Essential $149 plus $6, Complete $199 plus $7, and HCM $199 plus $12 per month, as of September 2026. Mid-market pricing is quote-only.
  • The honest limitation: Those published rates stop at 50 employees, and the parent pricing pages show nothing, so a mid-market buyer lands back in a quote cycle.

7. Workday: enterprise HCM for over 1,000 employees

Workday is enterprise HCM and financials, bought by large organizations that need deep reporting, complex org structures and a long implementation. It is a different weight class from the rest of this list.

  • Category: Enterprise HCM.
  • Best for: Organizations above roughly 1,000 employees with a dedicated HRIS team and a multi-quarter implementation budget.
  • Pricing: Not published. Workday states that pricing varies, and its public pricing URL does not resolve as of September 2026. Workday remains an independent company as of the same date.
  • The honest limitation: Native payroll runs in five markets only, with 180+ reached through partners. India is not native, so an India team is handled by a partner rather than by Workday itself.

8. TriNet: a PEO alternative to ADP TotalSource

TriNet is a professional employer organization. It becomes the co-employer of your US staff, which is how it pools your team into large-group benefits plans. It replaces TotalSource, not RUN or Workforce Now.

  • Category: PEO.
  • Best for: US companies under roughly 200 employees that want benefits pricing they could not reach on their own.
  • Pricing: Not published. TriNet confirms a per-employee-per-month model quoted through a three-step process, as of September 2026.
  • The honest limitation: Co-employment is a legal arrangement, not a billing label. Unwinding it later means re-registering as the employer and re-papering benefits, and the model is US-focused.

9. Deel: global EOR and payroll aggregation

Deel employs people for you in countries where you hold no entity, and pulls payroll across many of them into one contract. If your reason for leaving ADP is international coverage, Deel is a stronger answer than we are.

  • Category: Employer of Record and global payroll aggregator.
  • Best for: Companies hiring across many countries at once, especially when no single country dominates the headcount. We keep a fuller list of Deel competitors if you are comparing the whole category.
  • Pricing: $599 per employee per month for EOR and $49 per contractor, published on its own pricing page as of September 2026. Contractor of Record is $325. We compare it against ADP Global Payroll separately.
  • The honest limitation: Breadth costs depth. A provider covering 130+ countries works through partner entities in many of them, so the quality of local advice varies country by country.

10. Wisemonk: an India-only Employer of Record

We are an Employer of Record in India and nowhere else. That is a real limitation on a list like this, and it is also the point. If India is where your team is, a specialist beats a generalist. If you need 40 countries, it does not.

  • Category: Employer of Record, India only.
  • Best for: Companies whose India headcount is large enough that the detail of Indian payroll matters more than country count.
  • Pricing: From $99 per employee per month, with no setup fees and no minimums, published on our pricing page as of September 2026.
  • The honest limitation: One country. If you are replacing US payroll or hiring across Europe, every other provider on this list serves you better than we do.

Hiring in India rather than replacing US payroll?

See what an India employee actually costs before you talk to anyone.

Which ADP competitors did not make the list, and why?

Six more came close. Most were cut because they duplicate a category already covered, or because we could not verify enough about them to write an honest entry. None was cut for being a weak product.

  • Paycom: A full HCM suite with employee-driven payroll. Cut as a duplicate of Paycor and Workday. Worth knowing that it manages 190+ countries but runs native payroll in only four outside the US, and India is not one of them.
  • Paylocity: A full HCM suite with 100+ countries of partner-delivered global payroll. Cut because its pricing page returned an empty shell, so there was nothing to verify.
  • BambooHR: An HRIS rather than a payroll engine, at Core $10, Pro $17 and Elite $25 per employee per month, as of September 2026. Payroll is a separate add-on with no published price. We track the BambooHR alternatives separately.
  • UKG Pro: Enterprise HCM, quote-only. Note that UKG Ready is a different product, so a Ready quote never stands in for a Pro quote.
  • HiBob: An HRIS positioned as a people platform, quote-only, with no payroll engine of its own.
  • Insperity and Papaya Global: Both plausible, neither verified on its own pricing page this run, so we are not describing either. The Papaya Global alternatives are covered elsewhere.

Which of these you shortlist depends less on the vendor than on your own situation.

Which ADP alternative fits your situation?

Route by the problem you are solving, not by the brand. Six situations cover most readers of this page, and each points at a different category. If two apply to you, solve the larger headcount first and add the second system later.

Find the line that describes you.

  • Under 50 US employees, and you want a price you can read: OnPay or Paycor's published tier. Both show a rate without a sales call.
  • Already on QuickBooks accounting: QuickBooks Payroll, for the ledger integration. Confirm the per-employee fee on your quote rather than from the website.
  • 50 to 2,000 US employees replacing Workforce Now: Rippling if you want IT and spend in the same system, Paycor or Paychex if you want a service relationship.
  • Replacing ADP TotalSource: Only another PEO works. TriNet or Paychex HR PEO, and price the co-employment unwind before you sign anything.
  • Over 1,000 employees with a dedicated HRIS team: Workday, and budget for the implementation rather than the licence.
  • Hiring where you have no entity: You need an Employer of Record, not payroll software. Deel if the hiring is spread across many countries, us if it is concentrated in India.

From our experience helping global companies hire in India, teams that outgrow ADP rarely leave over payroll itself. It is the first hire in a country where ADP cannot be the legal employer that forces the move.

Whichever you pick, the switch itself is where most of the risk sits.

How do you switch away from ADP without breaking payroll?

Switch at a quarter boundary, run one parallel cycle, and settle who files the year-end forms before you sign. Most failed migrations fail on tax forms and historical data, not on the pay run itself.

  1. Audit the contract first: Check the notice period, the termination clause and any year-end or off-boarding fee. Our fuller guide to switching payroll companies goes deeper on this.
  2. Fix the year-end handoff in writing: Agree whether ADP or the new provider files W-2s for the part-year each of you ran. This is the single most common gap.
  3. Export your data before access ends: Pull pay history, tax filings, deductions and employee records while the account is live. Access often stops at termination, not at the end of the notice period.
  4. Run one parallel cycle: Process the same pay period in both systems and reconcile gross, net and tax to the cent before you cut over.
  5. Tell employees before the first new payslip: A changed payslip with no warning generates more support tickets than any technical issue in the migration.

None of that is a reason to stay, but it is a reason to leave on your own schedule. The same sequence applies when you switch EOR providers.

When is staying with ADP the better decision?

Staying is right more often than a list like this admits. If ADP already handles something you would otherwise have to rebuild, the switch costs more than it saves. Four situations in particular argue for staying put.

  • You run payroll in dozens of countries: ADP Global Payroll reaches roughly 140 countries through local partners, per ADP's own material. Few global employment platforms match that breadth in a single contract.
  • You depend on TotalSource benefits: Leaving a PEO means re-registering as the employer and re-sourcing health plans. Price that work before you compare software.
  • Multi-state or union compliance already works: Rebuilding correct tax setups across many states is slow, and errors there are expensive to unwind.
  • You have integrations nobody wants to rebuild: If ADP feeds your general ledger, time system and benefits brokers, the real migration cost is integration work, not licence fees.

If none of those apply, the case for staying is mostly inertia.

What changed among ADP's competitors recently?

Four details invalidate much of the comparison content still ranking for this query. Two providers are no longer what older lists say they are, and two products that look like an Employer of Record are delivered by a third party.

  • Paychex and Paycor are one company: The $4.1 billion acquisition completed on April 14, 2025. Lists that still rank them as separate competitors have not been updated since.
  • Gusto does not operate its own EOR: Gusto Global is delivered by Remote, and Remote is the legal employer. Any page describing Gusto as an Employer of Record is wrong.
  • BambooHR's global add-on is also delivered by Remote: The HRIS is BambooHR's. The employment relationship abroad is not. We list the Remote alternatives separately.
  • Workday remains independent: As of September 2026, no change of ownership has been announced.

Check the status of any provider you shortlist, because one acquisition makes a whole review wrong.

How do we help if your team is in India?

Wisemonk is an India-native Employer of Record. We employ your team on our own Indian entity, run their payroll, and carry the statutory side so you do not need a local company.

We work with 300+ global companies, manage 2,000+ employees in India and process $20M+ in annual payroll, and we hold 4.8 out of 5 on G2. Employment starts from $99 per employee per month, with no setup fees and no minimums.

From our experience running India payroll for hundreds of companies, the statutory detail, provident fund, ESI, gratuity and TDS, is where platforms working through local partners slip, and where owning the entity earns its place.

We are a leading EOR in India, now expanding our services to the US and UK.

Here is how a finance lead running that setup describes it:

We've been using WiseMonk to support our India team for the past six months, and the experience has been excellent. They've handled everything from payroll and statutory compliance to equipment procurement and benefits enrollment, all with a level of responsiveness and professionalism that makes managing a remote India team from Canada feel seamless. Nileena and the team are always quick to reply and proactive about flagging anything we need to know. We'd happily recommend WiseMonk to other companies looking to hire and manage talent in India.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to ADP?

There is no single best one, because ADP sells four different products. For small US teams, OnPay and Gusto replace RUN. For mid-market, Rippling, Paycor or Paychex replace Workforce Now. TriNet replaces TotalSource. An Employer of Record replaces global hiring.

Who are ADP's biggest competitors?

ADP competitors include Paychex, Paycor, Workday, Paycom and Paylocity in payroll and HCM, Gusto, OnPay and QuickBooks Payroll in small-business payroll, TriNet in the PEO market, and Deel among global Employers of Record. Paychex and Paycor are now one company.

Does ADP publish its pricing?

No. ADP does not publish a list price for RUN, Workforce Now or TotalSource, and its payroll pricing URL returns a 404 as of September 2026. Among its competitors, only Paycor under 50 employees, OnPay and QuickBooks Payroll publish rates.

Is Paychex better than ADP?

Paychex is the closest like-for-like to ADP: payroll, HR services and a PEO with a named service rep. Neither publishes a list price. Paychex also acquired Paycor in April 2025, so it now owns two product lines rather than one.

Is Gusto better than ADP?

For a US company under about 100 employees, Gusto is usually simpler to set up and run than ADP. It is weaker for mid-market HR and for hiring abroad, because Gusto Global is delivered by Remote rather than by Gusto itself.

Is Workday or ADP bigger?

They compete at different ends of the market rather than head to head. ADP serves businesses from one employee upward, including very small ones. Workday sells enterprise HCM, typically to organizations above a thousand employees with a dedicated HRIS team.

Can ADP run payroll for employees in India?

ADP Global Payroll covers roughly 140 countries through local partners, so India is in scope. If India is your only overseas location, an India-native Employer of Record such as Wisemonk employs the team directly from $99 per employee per month.
